There are several national festivals in Sri Lanka. Among them the Sinhala and Tamil new year is regarded as the most important national festival. This is not only a national festival but also a cultural and social festival. The Sinhala and Tamil new year consists of a fascinating set of traditional rituals and custom which contributes to its multi-cultural flavor. Awurudu involves some traditional games such an Olinda Keliya, Eluwan Kama, and Chakgudu. The new year is the period when family members and relatives get together and have a nice time. People in all walks of life spend the new year period joyfully.
